It’s that time of year again when the leaves have fallen and snow blankets the earth. As the air has become chilly, we bundle ourselves from head to toe and we use comfort food to create a warm place in our bellies. That’s right, folks! I’m talking about that ever- endearing meat and tomato wonderfulness that never seems to come out the same twice. Yes, I’m talking about chili! This sensational dish has become a staple for Michigan’s winter season and a contest that everyone wants to be a part of.
Kalamazoo will be hosting their 10th annual chili cook-off and it is no exception from last year. More restaurants are participating than ever, new recipes have been developed and classic recipes kept. Taste testers will be filling the streets with eager bellies, laughter and joy.
Tasting over 40 different kinds of chili is fun but making the chili can be just as enjoyable. There is definitely a talent that goes into making a pot full of “award-winning” chili. I can say “award-winning” because I have helped in creating OptiMed Pharmacy’s “Chili Cure All,” which won the retail division of Chili Cook-Off for the past two years in a row. So what goes into a winning chili recipe, you ask? Well, besides mounds of love, hard work and fun, we have over 20 ingredients! I can’t give away our secret here but if you stop by for the Annual Chili Cook-Off in downtown Kalamazoo, we will share our recipe with you! So come downtown this Saturday, January 23rd where you can be the judge!
